Artist Scout

Also known as Artists and Repertoire (A&R), Talent Scout

A scout seeks out new artists for a record label.

Artist scouts are people who seek out new and upcoming artists to sign with a record label or production company. They search out new artists who are starting to gain popularity and connect with them to sign with their record company. They sometimes choose based on talent, popularity, alignment with label perspectives, or current trends. For this reason, artist scouts have to be up to date on many different changes and fluctuations in the music industry.

They spend a lot of their time listening to music, attending shows, and researching the artists of interest. It is a very active role and is good for someone who enjoys being in the scene of music and a changing environment.

Artist scouts often have a bachelor’s in music or a lot of experience in the music industry, usually through previous jobs or internships.
