A DJ specializes in the live performance of mixing tracks or the studio production of remixes.

DJs (disc jockeys) create unique musical works by mixing or remixing pre-existing recorded music into fresh combinations or entirely new songs. They utilize turntables, mixing boards, computer software, electronic instruments, and more in order to edit, loop, and rebalance their source music. Modern DJs generally fall into the categories of either performance mixing or studio remixing.

Performing DJs create their mixes in real time for audiences, showcasing their mastery of editing and mixing tracks on the fly into a unique performance. Some live DJs also specialize in the practice of “scratching” (using the scratching of the needle across vinyl records on turntables as a percussive instrument), layering this on top of the records. Live DJ performance requires excellent technical skills, understanding of music, presentation skills, and creativity to execute the mixes and keep an audience engaged.

Studio DJs work within the music studio where they carefully analyze, dissect, and restructure the tracks they are remixing using a wide array of music production software and electronic instruments. Remixing at this level is close to traditional music composition and arranging, with even the smallest details of the original music being edited or looped to create entirely new rhythms and melodies. The resulting track from a DJ’s remix can be anything from a reimagining of the original music in a new style to an entirely unique composition that is nearly unrecognizable from its source material. DJs must have intimate knowledge of music production and the softwares used for it (sometimes called digital audio workstations or DAWs). They also need to have a passion for creativity and music to fuel their remixing compositions.

This career path requires entrepreneurship skills to pick up gigs and perseverance to establish oneself as an artist. Most DJs begin by taking as many live gigs as they can or producing music in a home studio while also working another job.
