A licensing agent is responsible for obtaining permission from a music creator to sell their music and ensure the creator is properly compensated.
Licensing Agent
Also known as Licensing Representative
Those who work within a licensing department are responsible for obtaining the rights to sell products related to a musician’s or group’s work. They ensure the artists are properly compensated, usually through paying the artist a royalty. Licensing agents often work within a record label company, a licensing administration company, or a music publishing company.
A licensing agent must have a strong understanding of music law, licensing, and business. For this reason, they are expected to obtain a bachelor’s in a related field. This often means having a degree in music or music business with additional training in licensing through classes and internships within a licensing group or record company.
