Lighting Technician
Also known as Lighting Designer, House Electrician
The Lighting Technician is often responsible for maintaining and operating the lighting equipment in a concert hall or performing arts venue. The technician must be knowledgeable about the lighting equipment, including who the manufacturer is and how to do simple repairs or secure replacement parts.
The technician often has to safely climb ladders or operate lifts on the stage in order to change bulbs or focus lighting fixtures. This is a career for someone who is very comfortable with heights. The technician will operate the lighting console for concert programs, so they must coordinate needs with the Stage Manager well in advance of the first rehearsal. Lighting needs are sometimes communicated by a tour manager in advance planning.
Lighting technicians could be hired to work at a venue, for an organization, as a stage crew member, or be a part of a touring guest artist’s crew.
